of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev

Unity of the people and systemic reforms are a solid foundation for the nation’s prosperity

Our course is immutable, the goal is clear. We know what must be done to achieve it

In November 25, 2020, an online webinar was held on the topic "The security situation on the Korean Peninsula", organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The main speakers of the event were Dr. Kim Jina, Research Fellow at the Korea Institute for Defense Analysis (KIDA), Dr. Bong Yanshik, Research Fellow at Yonsei University for North Korean Studies, Dr. Chon Myung Guk, Army Officer, Korea Institute for Defense Analysis (KIDA).

The invited guest was Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yerzhan Ashikbayev.

The agenda of the webinar was devoted to security issues on the Korean Peninsula, denuclearization policy and Kazakhstan's experience in this area, as well as the current political situation in North Korea.

Experts noted that from time to time the situation on the Korean Peninsula aggravates so high that it risks escalating into an armed conflict. This problem threatens not only the two Korean states, but also negatively affects the entire international security system as a whole.

The participants of the event stated the necessity and importance of continuing the course on denuclearization and achieving peace on the Korean Peninsula. It seems important to continue negotiations within the framework of the Six (Russia, China, USA, Japan, North Korea, South Korea).

The speakers also highlighted the exemplary experience of the Republic of Kazakhstan in renouncing nuclear weapons. It was noted that thanks to its nuclear-free path, Kazakhstan was able to gain the necessary trust in the international community.

At the end of the main session of the webinar, experts held a discussion and answered all questions of interest.

Alisher Abdreshev, a research fellow of the International Studies Department, took part in the online webinar on behalf of the KazISS under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
